FC Helsingør signs New Zealand internationals Elijah Just and Callum McCowatt to contract extensions

Following dominant performances in the 2020 Olympics and NordicBet Liga, the pair of All-Whites ink new two-year extensions

HELSINGØR (August 31, 2021) — FC Helsingør today announced it has signed forwards Elijah Just and Callum McCowatt to new contracts through the summer of 2024. The pair of New Zealand internationals have combined to score seven goals and register three assists this season, launching the Elsinore club to the top of the NordicBet Liga table with an unbeaten start through seven matches.

We are delighted to continue our journey with both Elijah and Callum,” FC Helsingør sporting director Brian Gellert said. “Both players came to the club very young and have developed into dynamic attacking players that are off to tremendous starts in the League. We’re happy they have decided to commit their futures to Helsingør, and we’re excited for the future together.”

Just, 21, is a quick and technical winger with three goals and an assist in five games this season. Just joined FC Helsingør in 2019, scoring nine goals and registering two assists all-time. Just played all four of New Zealand’s matches in their run to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, assisting on a goal against Honduras in Group B action.

I could not be happier to have earned a new contract with FC Helsingør,” Just said. “I’ve had a great experience here at the club and am pleased to be able to develop as a player and help the club in its biggest moments, like our promotion out of the 2.Division, last year’s promotion group playoff finish and this year’s amazing unbeaten start. The sky’s the limit for our group, and I want to continue playing my part.”

McCowatt, 22, joined FC Helsingør a year after Just, adding an attacking element for both club and country in 2021. All in all, McCowatt has scored seven goals in 29 matches in Denmark — including four goals in four consecutive matches, each of which has been either a game-winner or an equalizer. McCowatt featured in all four of New Zealand’s Olympic matches in Tokyo before returning to Helsingør.

“It’s wonderful to receive a new contract with the club as we all strive for our objectives this year,” McCowatt said. “It shows the club’s confidence in me, and helps me as a player to focus on playing, scoring, and winning matches. Helsingør has felt like home from the first moment I arrived, and I’m excited to see what great things we can do this season and beyond.”

Atop the NodricBet Liga table through seven matches FC Helsingør (6-1-0, 19 points) enters the September international break two points clear of second place. Helsingør faces Skjold on Wednesday in the second round of the Sydbank Pokalen (18.00 CET | TICKETS) before returning to league action on Sept. 12 at home against Hvidovre.
